I served five years on active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps, from 2005 to 2010. As a teenager, I started heading down the wrong path, and I knew I needed discipline and direction. Joining the Marine Corps became one of the proudest decisions of my life. During boot camp, I developed an eating disorder that affected me for several years. Then I found CrossFit. After leaving the Marine Corps, I immersed myself in the methodology and the community, and it wasn’t long before I realized I no longer struggled with my eating disorder. The leadership skills I developed as a Marine have carried over into how I coach, lead my team, and run my gym. Both environments place a strong emphasis on camaraderie and working toward something bigger than yourself. The discipline I developed in the Marine Corps has also helped me stay consistent with CrossFit for more than 18 years.

My path to military service was unconventional, but one I wouldn’t trade. Two years after college, I applied for Army Officer Candidate School. I began OCS at Fort Benning, Georgia, but an injury forced me to choose between leaving the military and enlisting. I chose to enlist as an air traffic control operator. Although my time in the Army lasted less than a year, I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve and continue my family’s legacy of military service by following in my father’s footsteps. I joined CrossFit OYL because I wanted to be competitive in the Tactical Games. The people, the coaches, the atmosphere — I drank the CrossFit Kool-Aid, and now I won’t ever leave. The idea of CrossFit is community. There’s a “leave no one behind” mentality, and people will always cheer on the last folks working to complete their WODs. It’s a similar mentality in the military: You look out for each other and leave no one behind.
