I served in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer and paratrooper from 1990 to 1998 and reached the rank of sergeant. As “Airborne Sappers,” we trained to jump into a location, secure it, and then move to our objective to complete our mission. We trained hard together and pushed each other to be the best we could be — our lives depended on it. I started CrossFit late in life. I had just turned 54, my youngest child was off to college, and after about four years of running ultras, I had hit a plateau. I needed strength training, but I learned that CrossFit provided what I was looking for and what I didn’t know I needed. At my gym, CrossFit provides the camaraderie and accountability I felt back in my Army unit. And just like being prepared for anything was important as a soldier, being prepared for anything life throws at me is equally important, and CrossFit training does just that.

I served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, and it shaped the very foundation of the person I am today. Leaving my home, family, and comfort zone, I discovered something bigger than myself and a sense of brotherhood with complete strangers that my small bubble from home would have denied me. CrossFit changed my entire idea of what health and fitness looked like. It showed me that a well-balanced routine of strength, mobility, cardio, and skill can lead to things I never thought possible. I am no longer suffering from chronic illness; the need for prescription medication is completely gone, and I have gained confidence I thought was lost forever. In the military, a stranger in uniform is an instant brother. CrossFit was like that the day I walked in the doors for the first time. Nobody knew me or my story, but they welcomed me into the family immediately.

I served five years on active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps, from 2005 to 2010. As a teenager, I started heading down the wrong path, and I knew I needed discipline and direction. Joining the Marine Corps became one of the proudest decisions of my life. During boot camp, I developed an eating disorder that affected me for several years. Then I found CrossFit. After leaving the Marine Corps, I immersed myself in the methodology and the community, and it wasn’t long before I realized I no longer struggled with my eating disorder. The leadership skills I developed as a Marine have carried over into how I coach, lead my team, and run my gym. Both environments place a strong emphasis on camaraderie and working toward something bigger than yourself. The discipline I developed in the Marine Corps has also helped me stay consistent with CrossFit for more than 18 years.
